Innovation Fight Club

A combination of Moot Corp, investor pitch, impromptu debate and "Survivor".

Summary

Up to five contestants participate in an impromptu pitch contest. They are each given a random market area (e.g. entertainment, travel) and a random theme (e.g. time savings, fun). They each are given 20 minutes to come up with a pitch for a business, web site and/or service which represents a viable innovative way to profitably address the given market area and theme. Each participant can use nothing but a whiteboard or butcher paper as presentation aids.

Each pitch lasts up to 5 minutes with up to 5 minutes for questions. Each contestant will receive their market area and theme exactly 20 minutes before it's their turn to present.

At the end of the pitches, each audience member will be able to cast a secret vote for their favorite pitch -- the one they think most represents a viable interesting innovative business. The recipient with the most votes will win $1m in seed financing from a top-tier venture firm.*

Constraints

  • Individual contestants only; no teams, please.
  • No pre-prepared material; you will receive your mix of market area and random theme only 20 minutes before your presentation.
  • Each participant can only use a whiteboard or butcher paper for their presentation (optional but no powerpoint etc).
  • Max of 5 minutes for the presentation with a hard stop.
  • No heckling.... well maybe some, if it's funny.
  • The pitches don't have to be based around a web site idea, but they should incorporate current technology or be recognizable as very innovative.

* - either that, or just eternal glory and possibly some sort of token prize.
