ACTLab Presents-

"The Pedagogy of Innovation

Joseph Lopez, Dusin Younse and Brandon Wiley from the ACTLab will give an introduction to an innovative program at the University of Texas called the ACTLab. The brain child of Sandy Stone, the ACTLab is a group of classes focused on teaching students how to "make stuff". Their Fall courses are "Extreme Free Style Hacking" and "The Uncanny". If you have an interest in learning about how a "think tank" type program can be created in a University without corporate "help", come to their session for a great breakdown of how a program can not only teach students to "take risks" and "be awesome", but also find success with their "risking taking".

BIG Broadband, Telepresence and Remote Innovation

The U.S. is no longer the top economy for IT competitiveness and innovation. According to the World Economic Forum, in 2005 we fell from #1 to #5 behind Singapore, Iceland, Finland and Denmark, largely because we also fell behind in broadband adoption. What new apps are enabled with each bump in bandwidth? And what is needed to preserve global competitiveness? (by Wayne Caswell)

The DTV Transition Time Bomb

Real world tests by TeleTruth.org uncovered serious problems with the Analog-to-Digital transition that will affect millions of Americans currently receiving terrestrial TV broadcasts when the FCC takes back analog spectrum in February 17, 2009. The FCC offers a $40 rebate for converter boxes but never tested them (i.e. allows vendors to do self-testing) and neglects to warn consumers of pending problems. When the deadline approaches, and they start transitioning in mass, the @#%$ will hit the fan. Fly-by-night scam artists disguised as “experts” will emerge to take advantage of the senior, disabled, low-income, non-English-speaking minority, rural/tribal, and others.
